Even though this is a wild and wide open part of the country this particular campground is the only high-country campground from Las Cruces to El Paso. Do not visit on the weekend or during any holiday unless you are far into the park as it gets extremely crowded. The people that come here don't come as couples either. They show up 12 to a vehicle. |
Two national recreation trails begin in the campground. I You can see spectacular views of the Organ Mountains and Tularosa Basin from most trails in the park. The Baylor Pass Trail is the only trail open to horse back riding. Take lots of water and drink it!
Directions: From Las Cruces go east 14 miles on U.S. 70 from the I-25/U.S. 70 intersection. Go south on Aguirre Spring Road (about a mile after the San Augustine Pass) for six miles. At mile marker 4 the road starts getting real steep. The Aguirre Spring Campground is beside Organ Mountains, east of Las Cruces.
Vanabode Special Notes: It costs $3 per vehicle for day use and $3 per night to camp. The campground is open all year. From April to October, the entrance gate is open from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. From October until April, it is open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. At $90 a month it is not quite free but for the small price, a real nice time can be had at Aguirre Spring Campground in New Mexico.
