Mystic Connecticut is a sleepy, attractive, clean, upbeat coastal community.

boat tours in mystic conn.

Above: Here in the Mystic Seaport portion of town they’ve done something very unique. Planners took many acres of waterfront land on a gorgeous peninsula, walled it off, preserved all the buildings and shops, and created a tourist park called Mystic Seaport dedicated to preserving and showcasing the seafaring lifestyle.

Museums, art galleries, boat building facilities, repair shops, sail making schools, historic homes, marinas, and dock systems line the streets and waterfront. We see as much as we can while avoiding the twenty-four dollar per person admission fee, which allows for access to the bulk of the site and live reenactments. If you have more money than time, I suggest a weekend visit to this quaint area. You won’t be disappointed.

We head downtown. That huge brick building adjacent to the bridge is where many shops and food joints operate. We hit the waterfront retail joints, shoot pictures over the bridge at the marina, watch the boats go in and out of the harbor, and grab an awesome early bird dinner for eight bucks an entrée at the Azu bar and restaurant on the bridge over the river.

It’s dark inside, with thirty people already eating and drinking and celebrating the good weather with drinks at the fifty-foot long wood bar. Kelly chomps on a fig, blue cheese, and arugula pizza topped with Prosciutto. I eat two of the best non-Mexican taco’s I have ever had. The marinated cubes of pork are smothered in smoky chipotle sauce and house made salsa. The sauce runs out both ends of the soft tortilla and I am obliged to lick it off my fingers. The feta cheese glues much of the taco together and supplies a pleasant pungent finish.

mistick village shopping

This crazy goose was going from fence slat to fence slat poking his long grey neck through and trying to peck my wife and I and this Corgy dog. This was in the Olde Mistick Village (Yes different spelling) three miles from Mystic Village Seaport.
