This page from my master list of all Las Vegas articles I wrote while developing Vanabode as the best travel vehicle for cheap easy long term road trips. Bette Midler Las VegasBette Midler Las Vegas has a 2 year contract at Caesar's Palace to perform her new show, The Showgirl Must Go On, in the Colosseum. She is packing the 4,300 seat theater every night. Famous for her quick wit and brash humor, audiences will not be disappointed with her spectacular Vegas themed show.
The start of the sensuous pink fan dance in this photo at Bette Midler's Las Vegas show opening night in the Colosseum on the stage where Celine Dion once played. Bette is attached to huge headress and all the dancers are hidden as this number begins. The Divine Miss M is known to audiences as a 4 time Grammy Award winner for her songs, Wind Beneath my Wings, The Rose and From a Distance. She received a special Tony Award for her Broadway role in Clams on the Half Shell Revue.
A tornado is created on screen that literally deposits Miss M on stage. Her show called The Showgirl Must Go On is lively, creative and utilizes all of Miss M's divine talents. She's a top-notch entertainer, a comedian who knows how to keep her audience laughing. Bette even uses her well-known character, Delores Delago, the mermaid in a wheelchair. But she multiplies her 20 times. You will see 20 dancers roll out in their own wheelchairs dressed as mermaids zigzagging around the stage in dance formations, wagging their tailfins then slithering down on the floor. In the Bette Midler Show you'll also meet Soph, the oldest showgirl in the world. You see Miss M likes to take an idea to the max. Bette dressed as a showgirl really looks pretty good. She stands on top of a staircase with a pink feathered headdress that spans half the width of the stage. Bette excels at joke telling in a fast repartee style. She also pays tribute to Dean, Frank, Sammie and Elvis in a medley of songs. Using the largest state-of-the-art screen she projects Elvis as King who has gone to heaven, then commences to talk and sing with his huge image on the LED screen on stage. She's aligned vintage Bette on the big screen with Vegas Bette in her famous song and dance number, Bugle Boy and Company B. At one point the spotlight zeroes in on her sitting on the edge of the stage where she picks up her ukulele and sings a short solo song. Of course the show would not be complete without her most famous hit, Wind Beneath my Wings, the theme from her 1990 movie, Beaches. It's her final number and leaves the audience in a nostalgic mood.
The 14 piece band is always onstage. And behind the band, one can see the large screen used to such great effect in Bette's stunning show. Later, using the huge screen to great effect, Bette sings with Elvis who is 'King in heaven' and larger than life on the big screen. Elvis is well used as a character rather then just a decoration by Bette's quick wit and repartee. Every seat in the house is a good seat whether you are sitting in the orchestra or the peanut gallery. Check the sponsors on this page for great deals on tickets. Well-known Vegas entertainers were at the opening night after party at Pure nightclub such as Siegfried and Roy, and comedian Rita Rudner who performs at Harrah's. Other celebrities walking the red carpet were Taye Diggs, Ricki Lake, Meatloaf, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and more. Taye wouldn't take a photo with me but he gave me his gift bag which had an assortment of chocolates and a gift card to Payard, the ultra-chic chocolate and pastry shop in Caesar's.
Bette gives you a live, friendly experience. Instead of putting her 14 musicians under the stage or in the basement watching TV monitors like they do in "Cirque du Soleil" productions, the musicians are on stage accompanying her every move and song and also serve to fill up the vast structure. Choreographer Toni Basil set her creative ideas on 20 female dancers who compliment Ms. Midler. Bette Midler Las Vegas calls her dancers 'Caesar Salad' and tells them to go toss themselves at the end of a dance number and not to put on too much dressing. 'A little will do.'
Bette's show stopper is a group number featuring her well-known character: Delores Delago, the wheelchair mermaid. Delores is magnified 20 fold when every dancer performs becomes a wheelchair mermaid and re-creates famous kaleidoscope formations so reminiscent of Busby Berkeley. Bette also has a trio of sidekicks she calls the Harlettes that sing, dance and interact with Miss M throughout the antics-filled show. When you are ready to see a great Vegas show and entertainer go see Bette Midler Las Vegas. These are the kinds of things Vanaboding allows us to do, have lots of fun while spending almost nothing on living expenses.
