Mount Rushmore National Memorial
Keystone South Dakota
Mount Rushmore near Sturgis provides info on the memorial
and park fees. Mount Rushmore National Memorial located in the heart of the Black Hills is an awesome
and impressive granite structure memorializing four American presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson,
Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Mount Rushmore hotel and camping accommodations are available
locally, see notes below. The granite faces of the presidents tower 5,500 feet above sea level and are
scaled to men who would stand 465 feet tall (each head is as tall as a six-story building). Sculptor Gutzon
Borglums attention to detail makes the faces of presidents appear almost lifelike.
The visitor center and museum hosts a 13-minute film on the memorial including biographies of the four
presidents and how Gutzon Borglum executed each man's portrait on the cliffs of Mount Rushmore. A book
store and concessions are available.
The Presidential Trail is a half-mile loop offering closer viewpoints of the faces. The trail is accessible
to all visitors including the elderly and handicapped. Walk the Avenue of Flags, the main viewing area.
Rangers provide interpretive walks and talks including the Evening Sculpture Lighting Ceremony. The ceremony
takes place nightly in the park's amphitheater.
